Three Titans Honored at Signing Ceremony

San Marino High School on Wednesday afternoon held a signing ceremony for three of its seniors, who will be plying their athletic trades “at the next level.”

A decade of hard work has paid off for Kali Villaluna. The San Marino High School senior has committed to the University of San Diego, where next fall she will join the Toreros swim team and hopes to major in Business. A specialist in the 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke, Kali is the daughter of Doojduen and Fernando Villaluna. Last year, Kali, San Marino High School’s senior Homecoming Princess, was named Most Valuable Player for the Lady Titan swim team.

Kourosh Hassibi will attend the University of Chicago, where he intends to major in Economics and play football for the Maroons. A defensive tackle, Kourosh played all four years at San Marino High School, where he was defensive Most Valuable Player as a freshman and was first team all-Rio Hondo League this past fall. The son of Fara and Babak Hassibi, Kourosh also played two years of basketball while at SMHS. His twin sister, Kimia, is a National Merit Semifinalist.

Carver Weirick will be headed to the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he will play volleyball for the Ducks. A starting outside hitter for San Marino High School’s varsity volleyball team, Carver is also plays for the San Gabriel Elite Volleyball Club. Carver will attempt to major in Mechanical Engineering and Stevens’ five-year co-op program. The son of Carolyn Weirick, Carver is excited to be attending school near his cousin, Emily, a freshman at Fordham who also plays volleyball.

Pasadena Poly to Join Rio Hondo
League for 2020 Football Season
One-Year Agreement Will Fill Six-Team Schedule

TRIBUNE SPORTS EDITOR

Capping negotiations that have taken place for several weeks, it was announced this morning that Pasadena Polytechnic School's varsity football team will compete in the Rio Hondo League for the 2020 season, San Marino High School Athletic Director David Irie confirmed today. The Panthers will join San Marino, Monrovia, La Cañada, South Pasadena and Temple City in offering the first six-team docket since Blair folded its squad during the 2016 campaign.
The arrangement, which has been agreed to by administrators from all six schools, is for one year only. Poly has previously competed in the Prep League, which fielded only three teams in 11-man football for the 2019 season. Poly already had three Rio Hondo League teams on its 2020 football schedule when the arrangement was approved.
Blair will continue to compete in the Rio Hondo League in other sports and has told fellow athletic directors it plans to return to varsity football competition in 2021, according to Irie.
