“I think the key was definitely our defense and offense,” junior Avery Yra reflected. “We kept a lot of balls in play and got a lot of blocks. Before the game, we hyped each other up to get in a good mentality.”

Dougherty Valley’s boys water polo team celebrated another strong performance, winning 14-8. Offensive player Evgeny Yarkovich ( #2) credits communication and teamwork as the keys to success.

“Our defense held their top wing really well, and we just communicated a lot,” Yarkovich said. “That was the biggest factor.”

For Yarkovich, quick decisions and trust in his teammates fueled his offensive play. “Just taking shots instantly and not waiting, and really listening to my team instead of having tunnel vision [helped us win the game],” he explained.

Winning not only added to the Wildcats’ record but also boosted their confidence moving forward.

“It’s nice that we got a win, and it keeps us staying motivated,” Yarkovich said.

With steady progress and strong teamwork, the Wildcats are looking to carry this victory into the rest of the season.

On September 23, Dougherty Valley’s girls water polo team went up against the American Eagles. Fueled by sharp defense and steady offensive ex*****on, Dougherty Valley surged past with a score of 13-4.

Senior Raya Ghosh, No. 4, credited communication and adaptability as the keys to the Wildcats’ strong performance.

“We had great communication. We had a plan going into the game, which was great,” Ghosh said. “When I got rolled first quarter, we stuck with it and we adapted.”

Dougherty Valley built momentum early, but Ghosh emphasized that the team never grew complacent.

“We didn’t think this was an instant win,” she noted. “We kept fighting, showed up for every single goal, and stayed strong on defense as well.”

Preparation also played a role in the win. According to Ghosh, the Wildcats studied their opponents in advance and identified key players to defend.

“We prepared by figuring out which players were stronger and focusing on defense on them, as well as taking strong shots at goal,” she said.

Ghosh, who plays defense, highlighted the challenges of combatting the other team’s offense.

“A challenge I faced was not getting kicked out and getting defensive fouls,” she explained. “I kept my hips up and made sure I was fronting my player so the ball wasn’t getting into them.”

The match grew tense in the later stages, with opponents showing frustration, but Dougherty Valley maintained composure.

“She was understandably upset because her team wasn’t doing as well as they thought,” Ghosh said of an opposing player. “She got a little talkative towards the end and [got a] penalty.”

With the win, Ghosh said the Wildcats are gaining momentum heading into their next matchup.

“The team is really happy and excited to have such a good win, and we’re excited for our next game on [Thursday, Sept. 25],” she said.

On Tuesday Sept. 23, 2025, Dougherty Valley’s varsity flag football team lost against San Ramon Valley. Despite Dougherty’s defensive attempts, SRV maneuvered past the defense for a touchdown and a one point conversion towards the end of the first quarter. They strengthened this lead in the second quarter by scoring two more touchdowns and two more one point conversions before the first half of the game was over.

In the third quarter, Dougherty’s offense struggled to make complete passes, which ultimately led to interceptions made by the SRV team. SRV’s offense continued the barrage with two more touchdowns and a one point conversion.

Additionally during the third quarter, a new quarterback entered the stage, junior Dorian Minioza, with starting quarterback, junior Kaitlyn Lohe, sat out for the first play. After an interception thrown by Minioza, sophomore Lauren Lohe entered the game as quarterback, while Kaitlyn entered back in the game as a receiver.

Dougherty’s defense was unable to combat the multiple touchdowns scored by SRV in the third quarter, but drove down the field with a touchdown and one point conversion in the last quarter.

By the fourth quarter, Dougherty’s defense and offense couldn’t respond due to the overwhelming SRV offensive, resulting in a final score of 46-7. Their record now stands at 3-6 for the season.

“We got beat, but we beat ourselves as much as we beat ourselves. We didn’t do the things that we’ve been doing so well, both offensively and defensively,” Coach Barth said.

On Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025, the DVHS womens golf team played against Granada High School in a close match at the Canyon Lakes golf course. DVHS pulled through with a final score of 271-277, earning the win by just six points. In golf, the team with the lowest score wins, so every shot matters.

One of the standout players was freshman Amaya Reddy, who scored an impressive 41 points. As one of the only two freshmen on the team, her performance was especially notable.

The match featured many strong shots from players on both teams which led to a narrow score difference. In golf, a “par” is the expected number of strokes needed to finish the hole. The last strokes of the match were particularly important.

Senior Ananya Maram ended with a bogey, which is one stroke over par. Freshman Helen Yang finished with a double par.

“I did pretty well, I could have done better, maybe relaxed more and paid more attention to my swings,” said Maram.

“Golf’s a long game and you can have a bad shot and it doesn’t matter. You have to forget about it and go hit a good one,” said Coach Anthony Bellizzi. “It’s really easy to have one bad shot and you feel down, so a golfer has to have a short memory and keep thinking about the next shot. These girls do a really good job at that, they’re all really good at bouncing back.”

On Sept. 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk – a 31-year-old American political activist and high-profile conservative commentator – was fatally shot in the neck from a distance during one of his livestreamed “Prove Me Wrong” debates, located this time at Utah Valley University. News of his death was confirmed on social media by President Donald Trump at around 2:40 p.m. MDT (1:40 p.m. PDT).

In the hours following the terrifying incident, reactions to this act of political violence poured in from across the political spectrum. Although the shooter had not yet been identified, several Republican figures quickly blamed the so-called “radical left,” with Trump claiming that Kirk’s assassination was the result of Democratic comparisons likening the commentator to “Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals.”

The second set followed a similar pattern. DV maintained momentum for most of the set, but Foothill edged back in the final points, winning 25-22. Sokokuwa added, “The hardest part about yesterday was the ability to stay consistent throughout the entirety of the game.”
