We are classing up the joint this Saturday. This show is inspired by a concert my Bride and I attended earlier this year. It featured orchestral rock and roll. So in that same vein, we are going to bring the orchestra to the little town of Madrid! Some of your favorite rock songs performed with orchestra. So put on your leather tuxedo, and join us on 96.9FM KMRD-LP at 3pm MT/4pm GCT for some classical rock and roll. Followed by DJ Cygnus and The Rush Hour!!

So at this very moment, 42 years ago, I was loading up my 74 Firebird with some ”pre-concert supplies” And getting ready to load up and head to the Astrodome for the Texxas Jam to see this guy, who in my opinion, was the headliner of that whole music festival…. I’m not sure if this was actually at the Texas jam, but it was definitely the same stage set up and the same performance… complete with a 74 red Trans Am that had pyrotechnics shooting out of the cowl induction in the hood.

We are turning 10 this year!!!

KMRD turns 10!

It’s been a decade since our first broadcast on June 16, 2015! Ten years of hundreds of local volunteer DJs, a community of listeners and contributors and collaborators, 4 studios and a permanent home for the station, music and talk and interviews and original productions…

We’re so grateful that you’re a part of it, near and far! If you’re in the area, we’re having a small birthday party today, the 16th, 6-9pm at the station. Come see the new mural (and sign your name if you helped paint!), have a sno cone, and celebrate this milestone together.

Big 10 artwork by Gayle (The Madrid Triangle, Tuesdays 2-4pm) composed of the names of every show currently broadcast on KMRD 😍

Thinking back to 1983 I remember watching VH1 behind the music talking about Styx… one of the comments that was made by the former promotions Director for the band about the Texxas Jam date at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas the night before the Houston concert:

“It was the first time we heard an angry crowd. This was quaaludes, Jack Daniels and show us your t**s, they did not want to see robots in rubber suits and ‘actors.’ By the end of ‘Roboto,’ you could see that there was a traffic jam trying to get away from the stadium version of Kilroy. It was depressing, it was heartbreaking, but we had to press on and take Shakespeare into a football stadium? Disaster. Maybe the worst Styx gig I’ve ever been at. No, I take it back, the next night in Houston was worse.”

He definitely wasn’t wrong lol … I think it was a critic at the Dallas morning news that compared their cotton bowl concert “as essential as a parking lot full of whale vomit”…. To this day, the absolute worst concert I’ve ever been to and I think the only one I’ve walked out on three songs in The Paradise Theater tour was better the year before…. sadly this is what destroyed the band because JY and Tommy didn’t want to play show tunes which is what Dennis wanted

On June 19th of 1983 in the Houston Astrodome, one of the greatest music festivals in Texas history was held. The Texxas Jam. It featured Uriah Heep, Ted Nugent (before he went "completely" off the rails), Triumph (my second favorite Canadian power trio), Sammy Hagar (yes this was the concert that made me a HUGE Sammy fan), and Styx (I wish I could say something nice about that tour)... My brother, his best friend Steve, and my buddy Mark loaded up in my 74 Firebird and headed to The Dome for a day of kick ass Rock and Roll... Next Week, we will be celebrating a milestone event of my youth. Tune into 96.9FM KMRD-LP in Madrid, NM at 3PM MT/4PM Houston Time as we relive some amazing memories (at least the ones I can remember) from the Saturday in June 1983. That will be immediately followed by DJ Cygnus and The Rush Hour (by the way Rush was the headlining act for the 1984 Texxas Jam)
