The Brown City Banner is moving to the Sanilac County News!

- Memo from the Publisher -

The Brown City Banner, now in its 139th year of publication, will continue its journalistic journey with a slight bend in the road.

View Newspaper Group acquired The Brown City Banner from Journal Register Group in 2009 in a multi-paper deal that included The (Lapeer) County Press, Sanilac County News, Jeffersonian, Buyers Guide, Chesaning-based Tri-County Citizen, and the
Huron County-based papers Huron County Press, The Thumb Blanket, The Newsweekly and The Harbor Beach Times which were eventually incorporated into the Huron County View in 2011.

View Newspaper Group continued to publish The Banner as a stand-alone paper until April 2020 when, during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was combined with the Wednesday edition of The County Press.

Feedback from Banner readers and advertisers, as well as Brown City area community leaders, convinced us that pairing The Banner with Sanilac County News is a better fit.

Beginning today, The Banner will appear each week in the Sanilac County News. We will publish The Banner in both the Sanilac County News and the Wednesday edition of The County Press this week (June 4) and next (June 11). Thereafter, The Banner will publish in print only inside the weekly edition of the Sanilac County News. The Banner pages
will also be available to view online at www.
mihomepaper.com.

We hope our readers of the Sanilac County News enjoy The Banner and welcome those Banner readers who are also County Press subscribers to sign up for the Sanilac County News using our special offer of eight free weeks … pay $28 for a 52 week print subscription and get eight additional weeks free. Three Sanilac County high schools sent teams to the Michigan High School Quiz Bowl Championship Tournament last weekend.

Teams from Carsonville-Port Sanilac, Deckerville and Sandusky qualified for the state event for class C-D schools by winning at least one tournament in the local quiz bowl league.

Twenty schools entered the tournament held April 12 at Michigan State University.

Sandusky and Deckerville finished in the top eight, with Sandusky placing sixth and Deckerville seventh. Carsonville-Port Sanilac finished 15th.

Two local students earned first team all-state, which is for the five quiz bowlers who earned the most individual points in the tournament.

MISSING JUVENILE FOUND SAFE

Lexington Township - On Sunday, April 13, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Sanilac County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Camp Cavell following a report of a missing juvenile. Upon arrival, deputies learned that a 15-year-old female from Macomb Township had traveled to Camp Cavell with her family to participate in an Easter Egg Hunt event. Prior to the start of the event, the juvenile became upset and walked away from the group, presumably to calm down.

After the event concluded, the family realized the teen had not returned and was not answering her phone. Family members, friends, and camp staff began searching the area. When they were unable to locate her, they contacted 911 to report her missing.

Multiple agencies responded to assist in the search, including the Lexington Fire Department, Sanilac County Search and Rescue, the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, and an independent Michigan and Indiana-based Search and Rescue team. The search effort continued until nightfall, but the juvenile was not located.

Later in the evening, the sheriff’s office and family began receiving calls and social media reports of possible sightings. Based on this information, Sheriff’s personnel and the Michigan/Indiana-based Search and Rescue team responded to the area of Washington and Ridge Roads in Sanilac Township. Within minutes of beginning their search, the missing juvenile was located curled up in a ditch. She was cold and wet but otherwise unharmed. After being missing for nearly 12 hours, she was safely reunited with her family.

According to a press release by the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Paul Rich would like to thank everyone who assisted in this investigation, and he especially extends gratitude to those who called in with accurate and timely information. Without those critical tips, this search may have had a much different outcome.
