“There are always a few problems and concerns when you take on something as challenging as starting a police department from scratch,” Mayor Kristie Overson said. “But we felt it was the right move – and I am still convinced it was.”

Last July 1, the Taylorsville Police Department reached it’s one-year mark, serving and protecting the city’s 60,000 residents. As of our new year (Jan. 1), it’s 18-months old.

“It was such an amazing experience for the girls and their families,” Bassett said. “The (MVPAC) facility was awesome. Putting our dancers in such an exciting venue was so much fun. We called the performance ‘Panic! At the PAC 2022.’ And we’ve already reserved our date for ‘Panic! At the PAC 2023’ for next October.”

The Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center is providing lots of new opportunities for Taylorsville-based groups, including the dozens of young dancers who make up Stefanie Bassett’s Express Dance Company.

It was an odd set of circumstances that put Taylorsville Mayor Kristie Overson into her car this fall, bound for Summit County to present a national award to one of the city’s newer residents.

Taylorsville resident Spencer Harrison recently received a national award, prompting Mayor Kristie Overson – at the behest of her granddaughter – to drive up to Summit County to make the presentation.

The Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation division is in the midst of a massive trail construction project which will eventually connect Magna to the Jordan River Corridor. Nearly all of the trail runs adjacent to existing irrigation canals. And next year, ground will be broken on the portion of trail that spans nearly all of Taylorsville.

Taylorsville City has made a $140,000 contribution to a $3.4 million project for the construction of a paved walking and biking trail running from 4100 W. 4700 South to 2200 W. 6400 South.

“This was our first in-person, face-to-face art show since before COVID hit – and we could not be more thrilled with the performing arts center venue,” Taylorsville Arts Council Co-Chair Howard Wilson said.

Back from its coronavirus hiatus, the Taylorsville Arts Council’s annual art show shifted to the fall this year – and into the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center, for the first time ever.

“When I found this place (Bell’s Deli, 1207 W. 4800 S.), it was still a convenience store and gas station,” Phyllis Kim explained. “One of the things that appealed to me most is that it has an attached apartment. So, I bought the place in 1987 and we moved in.”

A tucked away Taylorsville dining institution is now under new management, after Bell’s 48th Street Deli Owner Phyllis Kim decided to lease her business to a new operator so she can retire and pay a long overdue visit to her native Korea.

“I am really excited for then to begin reviewing cases,” Mayor Overson said. “They are top-notch individuals – and I know they have been very well trained. I am pleased to see them get to work.”

The five members of the new Taylorsville Citizen Advisory Board have completed their training – through the city’s police department on use-of-force policies – and have now begun reviewing case files.

“We’ve had to cancel a number of aerobics and yoga classes in recent months because we just don’t have enough people coming in for them,” Taylorsville Recreation Center Facility Director Tracey Gines said.

Taylorsville Recreation Center opened its doors 20 years ago. But now its operators – the Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation Department – are making an all-out effort to draw more people back to the spacious, multipurpose facility.
