FISH of Sanibel-Captiva, Inc. kicked off its 2025 JOG N JAM with the race on Nov. 1 at The Community House on Sanibel. The concert is set for Dec. 6 at the ‘Tween Waters Inn & Marina on Captiva. The 10K/5K had 505 runners from Florida, the Northeast, Midwest and Southwest, Canada, Denmark, Italy and Great Britain, with nearly 40 youths in the Kids Fun Run.

The SCCF reported that invasive exotic plants have started to become noticeable around the island, including in places where they were not found before. The storm surges from Hurricanes Ian, Helene and Milton significantly hindered the growth of exotic plants, including air potato, Brazilian pepper, climbing cassia, lead tree and wedelia.

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge (Official) reported that the government shutdown ended as of today. In the coming days, its award-winning restrooms is scheduled to reopen, and there will be a reception/information table set up to answer questions. The Visitor & Education Center will remain closed for renovations, including the Refuge Nature Store.

The SCCF's Coastal Watch recently partnered with MANG and volunteers from Captains for Clean Water to plant 700 mangroves at Black Skimmer Island in the San Carlos Bay. Coastal Watch and MANG each provided red and white mangroves, and more than 100 of the mangroves planted were nurtured by the community through the Adopt-A-Mangrove program.

Pre-enrollment is currently being held for students who are new to the School District of Lee County for the 2026-27 school year. It is open to any student who is entering kindergarten next year, moving from a private or charter school, previously enrolled students moving back into the district, or relocating to the district from another county or state.

In partnership with Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Sanibel, FISH of Sanibel-Captiva, Inc. will host a free Gingerbread House Workshop on Dec. 3 in the church’s Parish Hall. Open to ages 18 and under, the afternoon will promise candy, creativity and plenty of laughter as youths decorate their own gingerbread houses.

The Children's Education Center of the Islands reported that last year its preschool students discovered a coconut that had sprouted, so they decided to raise it in a pot. Recently, they planted the baby coconut palm on the playground with Nature Education Specialist Sherry Fischer to continue to see it grow.
