Vote Climate!
For the record, last year, 2023, is now officially the hottest year on planet earth since record keeping began in 1850. The warmest day on earth was July 22, 2024. Hurricane Ian, which hit Southwest Florida with the largest storm surge since 1873, resulted in $112 billion dollars in damage. While there are still people reading this that believe Climate Change is a hoax, or a cycle, or simply overblown, there is a very powerful group of people who disagree. They are called Actuaries and they work for the insurance industry.

Florida gets hit by approximately 40% of all hurricanes that land in the United States. With the mid-Atlantic experiencing the warmest ocean waters ever recorded and storm after storm stirring along hurricane alley you know these number-crunching accountants are paying attention. Large re-insurance firms, such as Munich-re or Lloyds of London that cover the losses of thousands of smaller insurance companies are raising their rates with every degree of warming. They are in the insurance business to make money and storms like Ian, Debbie and the next BIG ONE scare the hell out of them.

Which brings us to politics. While there are still plenty of climate change deniers out there in Congress or running for office they are not on your side. Florida already leads the nation in insurance costs with a projected average cost in 2024 of $11,759 annually. Several Florida insurers have already requested a 50% increase for 2025. If you vote for candidates who reject the very idea of climate change you are, in essence, voting for higher insurance premiums. Drill baby drill might mean your gas prices drop a few dollars in the short term, but don’t you think that paying $15-17,000 a year for your home insurance policies is a far bigger problem? That’s why you should make sure your candidate not only believes in climate change, but that they are willing to do something about it. Otherwise drop your coverage and risk everything you have in an overheated world. Good luck with that one.

With hurricane season clearly upon us I thought I would remind those of you who might not be familiar with this title, "Way Under Contract - A Florida Story," and encourage you to give it a read. Set on a fictional island named Shoreside this novel is a classic black comedy with my typical twisted sense of humor. It's all about a Cat-5 hitting a barrier island with a huge storm surge and the resulting catastrophic results. It's completely out of print but can still be downloaded on your favorite e-book device. Ian, the real hurricane, was very, very similar to the fictional Emily in this riveting tale of the power of Mother Nature. The book won the Patrick Smith ("A Land Remembered") Award for the best work of Florida fiction the year it was published.

After seven reprints and tens of thousands of copies sold, as well and more than a thousand e-books, "Six Mornings on Sanibel" is officially out of print. There might be a copy or two left at McIntosh Books on Sanibel but I'm not sure they have any remaining either. It has been a great run but at this juncture Indigo Press will not be printing an 8th edition. You can still download a copy on any e-reader out there or check a copy out at the Sanibel Library. Thank you all for your support of this title since it's first printing in 1999 and I appreciate all the incredible emails and letters I have received over the years as to how this little novel, set on the Sanibel fishing pier, has impacted peoples' lives. It's this that makes a writer know they've written a worthwhile tale.

Happy Earth Day! As I've done several times over the past few years I'm posting some shots of sunset taken half way down Island Inn Road on Sanibel. Most, except for one, were taken near sunset and I love the ever changing angle of the sun as well as the endless and varied cloud formations beyond the five trees. Remember to "Vote Climate" this year as it now matters more than ever. Celebrate the infinite pallet of mother nature.

There is a name for people who chase eclipsis: Umbraphile. Having seen the total eclipse in 2017, Molly and I tried our luck with the Texas eclipse of 4/8/24. Thinking the next one is 8/23/2044 there is a slight possibility I might not show up, we hopped in the Prius and headed West toward Uvalde and the Big Bend National Park in the very southwestern part of the state. Here are some captures from our journey. Spoiler alert...the eclipse was cloudy.
