“Drought and Flood” by hydro-geologist Michael Hoover has just been released in both soft and hard cover. Tracing the history of floods and droughts in Santa Barbara, California, from millions of years ago to the present, Hoover gives the reader a fascinating overview and understanding of how weather patterns and the geological landscape shape and direct the flow of water here.

A water engineer in Santa Barbara for over 40 years, Hoover brings to life the story of our contemporary droughts and floods, as he follows efforts of the first Europeans through to the arrival of the Americans and present days to bring water to the local population.

Of special interest is his explanation of the mechanisms and contributing factors leading to local fires, floods, and even debris flows. The charts and maps and wonderful historic photos make this book a great reference for those who live in California or call Santa Barbara home.
