Learn the story of Joanne Ho - Excellence Award Winner in Asian American Stories 2025

"My mom has always wanted me to wear bright colors. She likes people to stand out and be noticed.

In her youth, my mom wasn’t always able to stand out. There were many instances where she had to hide. The political turmoil in China forced her family to immigrate, and as they moved, she quietly learned several languages- her native Sichuanese, Shanghainese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. With the gift of these languages, she found a super-ability—a talent of connecting with people.

She is a bridge between Americans. New immigrants and established, elders and youngsters, those who can speak for themselves and those who cannot. She helps those who are seen and also those who might be hidden. She demonstrates how to be a neighbor.

My mom shows people that they are noticed, and how bright and colorful they are. And to me, that is her gift to America."

Learn the story of Hong Nguyen-Phuong - Excellence Award Winner in Asian American Stories 2025

"My Gift to America is the key to unlocking its greatest resource: its people.

Born in war-torn Vietnam and having to learn as a teenager that my country was wiped out of existence, I learned early that survival demands reinvention.

At MIT, I discovered the solidity of learned truths; as a mentor, I saw how individuals' stories (their careers) turn struggle into legacy.

Today, I empower others to master skills, own their narratives, and multiply their impact —- because America thrives when every voice is heard. From refugees to CEOs, I teach one truth: Your story is your power. Share yours. Let’s build a future where no gift goes unseen."

Why We Asians Should Tell Our Stories? The Truth Revealed!

Diana and Joel sat down for a conversation on the importance of sharing our own stories.

They reflected on the challenges of feeling like "permanent aliens" in the country, despite hard work and contributions, emphasizing the need for Asian-Americans to tell their own stories and reclaim their narratives.

Asian American Stories Contest encourages individuals to create one-minute videos showcasing their family legacies, cultural traditions, and personal gifts to America, such as values, innovations, and contributions.

Diana and Joel stress that storytelling is a powerful tool to humanize Asian-American experiences, foster belonging, and challenge stereotypes.

The overarching message is that Asian-Americans are integral to the fabric of America, and their stories deserve to be heard to create a more inclusive and understanding society.

The video discusses the importance of sharing Asian-American stories through the **Asian American Stories Video Contest 2025**, an initiative aimed at highli...
