Something very shocking happened to me recently:
I re-connected with an old family friend from the 1970s and 80s whom I hadn't heard from in over thirty years - I presumed he had left the area or had died. But it turned out he is an alive and well, very active and surprisingly sharp 93 year old still living in Santa Cruz!
I invited him to be interviewed on the Saturday Special and he accepted - we did the two hour interview and it was a very positive experience for me, for him, and for our listeners.
He contacted shortly thereafter and said that he wanted to re-establish the friendship - and help me make KSCO a more relevant and successful radio station! That sounded good to me so we had lunch together during which he got very agitated with the very mention of the names "Rush Limbaugh" and "Kay Zwerling". With great, LOUD passion, he said that "Rush and your mom are both DEAD AND GONE so let's not even MENTION them in this discussion, ok?"
Well, instead of ending the conversation at this point after his having dissed the memory of my mom, as I SHOULD HAVE, I STUPIDLY kept quiet in an attempt to show respect to an elder.
After the conclusion of this lunch meeting, he invited Amy and me to be HIS guest at the next lunch meeting - to be set up after we returned from a couple of weeks out of the area.
When I called him after we returned to Santa Cruz to schedule that next lunch meeting, as he had invited me to do, he said, "You know, I have been listening to KSCO a lot since we last talked and I didn't like what I heard - so I've changed my mind entirely and want nothing to do with you." Then I heard a click and the phone went dead.
I guess I shouldn't be so shocked because things like this have happened before in the last 32 plus years of operating KSCO NewsTalk Radio.
Why can't people with different opinions have civil conversations with each other?
The answer is, "they just can't" - and it's getting worse everyday. I think it's by design of the vast WOKE CANCEL CULTURE that divide-and-conquer liberal and communist forces have successfully raised over the last 50 years in US colleges and universities.
So - going forward, I will stop BRISTLING at the statement that KSCO is a CONSERVATIVE STATION - and PROUDLY OWN THAT PERCEPTION AS MOTHER KAY ALWAYS USED TO URGE ME TO DO.
We WILL, however, CONTINUE to be a voice for everyone who chooses to use it.
Please let me know your thoughts on this story - and my conclusion about KSCO going forward.
