Gaia Magazine

Gaia Magazine Gaia Magazine is the student-run environmental magazine at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

It aims to provide coverage of sustainability-related issues and initiatives on, or linked to, the UCSC campus, as well as the broader community, in order to further awareness and inspire constructive action. Gaia expresses and promotes the student vision of sustainability at UCSC and also strives to practice the sustainability it promotes by printing locally on recycled paper using soy-based ink

and conserving resources via online expansion. Gaia welcomes submissions from UCSC students, publishing online content year round in addition to an annual print issue in the Spring.

Howdy Gaians! Some major themes for Gaia this school year will include Sustainable Health (wellness) & foods :) as always we welcome and encourage student submissions (art, photography, poetry, recipes, articles, etc.) from UCSC at large.

Voting begins today! Vote YES on Measure 66 to support student spaces.

The Student Union Governance Board (SUGB) is a collective body of students charged to operate the Student Union to build campus wide community and promote educational, social, and cultural development. They oversee three buildings that are paid for by student fees: the Student Union, Redwood Building, and Student Media Center. Gaia Magazine is housed in the Student Media Center along with 15 other print/broadcast organizations. The purpose of this referendum is to be able to provide funding for the maintenance, operations, programming and reserves of the Student Governed Spaces. Students pay a lot but often don't get the services they deserve. This fee was created for students by students, and all of it is truly going back to the students in more ways than one. Join Gaia Magazine and vote YES on Measure 66.

Banana Slug News and City on a Hill Press tell you what you need to know about Measure 66: Support Student Governed Spaces.

During yesterdays banner drop, one of our banners read, "they tried to bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds." We want to acknowledge and apologize for using this proverb, originally "quisieron enterrarnos, pero no sabian que eramos semillas," in light of its most recent use as a reaction to the kidnapping and murder of the 43 students Mexican student from Ayotzinapa. It was not our intention to equate the struggle for divestment and climate justice to the tragic and horrible murder of these 43 students and had no knowledge that the quote had been used in recent protests. We are deeply sorry if our misrepresentation of the quote has offended anybody, and please contact us if you would like to discuss the matter further. We will be more prudent in the future.

Today we are supporting the UC Berkeley students who are sitting in at the UC Office of Investments, demanding that Richard Sherman, UC Regent and Chair of the Investments Committee, commit to divestment from the fossil fuel industry. We have tried to talk with the regents before, but we have not been listened to. Divestment must happen now before the effects of climate change become even worse. Questions? want to see this banner yourself? Swing by the quarry! Fossil Free UC Fossil Free Cal

Feeling all the feelings! Happy Earth Day, slugs. We hope you did something for our world today, and if not, there's always tomorrow (and the next day, and the day after that...you get the point).

Today is April 22nd. It’s a Friday, which calls for celebration in itself. But today isn’t just a regular day. It’s National Jelly Bean Day.

This past Monday I joined UC Santa Cruz students, locals and tourists as they once again spent a spring afternoon in the Porter Meadow smoking w**d to celebrate 4/20. As a freshman I was really excited to finally see it after hearing so much about it, so I walked over about an hour before the “big m…
