The music industry and Santa Cruz community are mourning the sudden passing of alternative pop icon Oliver Tree, who died at age 32 following a tragic mid-air helicopter collision in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All six people aboard were killed while Tree was in the middle of his global tour.

Known for his legendary "Turbo" bowl-cut persona and boundary-pushing performance art, the Santa Cruz native leaves behind a deeply original legacy. In an eerie interview just weeks before his death, Tree revealed he had structured his will to fund a 100-year trust called "Dr. Oliver Tree's Art Grants for Baby Geniuses" to support future independent artists. Local venues like the Rio Theatre have updated their marquees to honor the hometown legend.
