SOCAL WEATHER ADVISORY
Marie brings unusual tropical rain to the area through tonight.
Showers will increase from south to north. LA County and the Inland Empire are currently favored for the heaviest rainfall, with isolated thunderstorms possible. Activity should taper tonight. Enough moisture remains Monday for more typical mountain and desert monsoon storms, with a chance of some lingering activity in the IE.
No major flooding is expected, but roads will be unusually slick and dangerous — especially with holiday traffic. Much of the region has gone months without rain.
Drive carefully, allow extra time, and watch for ponding on freeways and surface streets. Stay weather-aware.

Rainfall outlook
West of the mountains
LA / Ventura: 0.35–1.00"+
Orange County: 0.20–0.70"+

San Diego: 0.05–0.25"
Mountains
0.50–2.00"+
Possible dusting of summer snow above 10,000 ft on San Gorgonio
Deserts
High desert: 0.05–0.25"
Low deserts: trace–0.35" (highest amounts in the Coachella Valley)

Corporate branding and exterior signage have officially been installed at 15800 Imperial Highway, marking the upcoming arrival of a new Goodwill Southern California Retail Store and Donation Center.

The new non-profit retail space takes over a commercial property at the corner of Imperial Highway and Santa Gertrudes Avenue that previously operated as a Rite Aid pharmacy before its closure. This location replaces the footprint of the older, now-vacated Goodwill Store and Donation Center that was formerly operating down the road at 14535 Telegraph Road.

The development has drawn highly mixed reactions from La Mirada residents who utilize the surrounding shopping center.

A significant portion of the local community has expressed dissatisfaction with the choice of tenant for the prominent commercial space. A primary concern among critics is the belief that the presence of a donation drop-off center and thrift retailer will attract transient, unhoused, or otherwise unwanted individuals to the immediate shopping complex, potentially impacting the safety and cleanliness of neighboring storefronts.

Conversely, other residents have praised the project, expressing relief that the large storefront is finally being developed after sitting vacant following the departure of Rite Aid. Proponents emphasize that filling the empty anchor space eliminates an eyesore from the intersection and brings new economic activity to the neighborhood.

An official grand opening date and specific operating timeline for the interior retail floor have not yet been publicly finalized by regional organizers. Once open, revenue generated from the retail thrift store and community donation center will fund local employment social enterprise programs, including job training and placement services for individuals facing employment barriers.

STORY: The La Mirada Junior League All-Stars are world champions after a dramatic extra-innings victory in the 2026 Junior League Baseball World Series.

On Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Heritage Park in Taylor, Michigan, the West Region representatives defeated Chinese Taipei (Shing-Ming Junior Little League of Taoyuan) 6-3 in 10 innings. The win marked La Mirada’s first Junior League World Series championship since 2003 and ended a long stretch of dominance by Chinese Taipei squads.

The championship game stayed tight throughout. With the score tied 3-3 entering the top of the 10th, Jaden (Jayden) Valdez delivered the decisive blow—a three-run home run down the left-field line. Jayden Lopez and Ryder Ong scored ahead of him. Reliever Jerimiah Ortega then retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.

The City of La Mirada will celebrate its newly crowned Junior League World Series champions with a hometown parade and recognition ceremony on Tuesday, August 25.

The championship parade is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Behringer Park. The procession will travel down Alicante Road to La Mirada Boulevard and conclude at City Hall.

Following the parade, a Civic Center celebration will feature a team introduction at 6:00 p.m. and formal recognition by the City Council at 6:30 p.m.
