Along the 487-mile historic corridor crossing New Mexico from east to west, communities are restoring gas stations, painting murals, installing public art and fixing up neon signs. For years the National Insurance Crime Bureau ranked Albuquerque as the worst city in the nation for car theft. Officials blamed Hyundai and Kia, in particular, and said viral videos showed how easy it is to steal those compared to other vehicles.
