Labor Day weekend in the New Mexico mountains, trading pavement and crowded campgrounds for a little more space.
I spent the weekend exploring trails near Ruidoso, Lincoln, and the Capitan Mountains in and around the Lincoln National Forest.
I managed to find exactly what I was hoping for: a spot less traveled, away from the Labor Day crowds.
No reservations, no hookups, no packed campground. Just a quiet place to set up camp, slow things down, and enjoy a part of New Mexico that still feels a little wild.
Sometimes getting away from the crowd means going just a little farther.
