Tonight on Monday with Miles we present Disc 2 of the Bootleg Series Volume 4 of Miles Davis in Newport 1953-75. There are 2 separate performances starting with July 4th, 1966 followed by July 2nd 1967. Both shows have the same lineup with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.

Before I introduce tonight's featured album on Monday with Miles I must ask that you excuse my French. Because tonight we feature the soundtrack to the movie Ascenseur pour l'echafaud. On the CD the translation says “Lift to the Scaffold” but other sources translate it to “Elevator to the Gallows.” Wikipedia describes it as a 1958 French crime thriller tragedy film directed by Louis Malle. The movie is available online and on DVD and Blue Ray.
Miles agreed to do the soundtrack and for 2 weeks, improvised some themes. He used the musicians he had been performing with on his European tour. They went into the studio with no preparation, drank for an hour, played for 4 hours, did 2 hours of editing and it was done.
Jazz critic Phil Johnson describes it as “the loneliest trumpet sound you will ever hear.”
This CD has several alternate tracks and there are 29 tracks in all so I won't list them.

Monday with Miles Schedule Part 2

Oops! You know how when you go on vacation you start thinking- 'Did I turn the stove off? Did I turn off the computer?'
Well, I went on vacation and thought I had everything taken care of- except I didn't. We played Birth of the Cool for 3 straight Mondays even though the promos said different. It's time to get back on track so here's the new lineup for Monday with Miles for the next few weeks. Thanks for your understanding and I hope you're enjoying the new show.
