Early College Opportunities High School students are getting real-world experience in sustainable construction as they take part in the Ice Box Challenge! Together with local pros, they’re building three tiny homes, each built to a different efficiency standard.

These homes will be displayed near the NM State Capitol. Each home will contain a ton of ice. As the summer heat kicks in and the ice melts, we’ll see how building methods from the 1950s, 2021 code, and ultra-efficient Passive House stack up!

This hands-on project introduces students to careers in the trades and makes a real impact. After the challenge, the homes will be donated to Esperanza Shelter as emergency housing.
