Frida Kahlo’s surrealist self-portrait, El sueño (La cama) [The Dream (The Bed)] sold at Sotheby's for $54.7 million – setting a new record for the most valuable work of art by a female artist sold at auction. The painting, which depicts Kahlo lying in a bed surrounded by vines and a skeleton, surpassed the previous record held by Georgia O’Keeffe and is considered a signature piece that reflects Kahlo’s deeply personal struggle with chronic pain.

– Lianne Kolirin on CNN

Marie-Laure Bernadac’s Knife-Woman: The Life of Louise Bourgeois is the first comprehensive biography of the French-American artist, who was active until her death at age 98. The book draws heavily on Bourgeois’ massive, well-preserved personal archive and artistic output – offering an impressively woven, chronological account.

– Bridget Quinn on Hyperallergic

Writing the first comprehensive biography of a major artist could prove daunting, but taking on Bourgeois's long life in art might be called heroic.

German director Isa Willinger’s new feature documentary, No Mercy, explores a provocative question posed by pioneering Ukranian filmmaker Kira Muratova that essentially asks whether women bring a more unflinching or “harsh” perspective to filmmaking. The film essay attempts to challenge stereotypes by featuring interviews with more than a dozen prominent female directors – including Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Joey Soloway (Transparent), and Alice Diop (Saint Omer) – who reflect on power structures, cinematic language, and how women use the camera as an act of agency against real-life violence.

– The Hollywood Reporter's Georg Szalai

The love letter to pioneering director Kira Muratova, screening at Austria's Viennale, features interviews with the likes of Virginie Despentes, Céline Sciamma, Alice Diop and Joey Soloway.
