On the 3rd Street Promenade, a watch party of the World Series attracted fans from both teams. Starting the game down two runs, Dodgers fans remained optimistic for a comeback. Dodgers fan Amandeep Singh said, “They’re a team that scores in the later innings. I expect our superstar lineup to come through in the seventh, eighth, and ninth.”

Before finding her way to SMC, she worked assorted jobs throughout Los Angeles. The shimmer of Hollywood’s promise drew her away from her home in Arizona, to go where “stars are born or made out of,” she said.

She explored influencer marketing, social media, packaging and entrepreneurship, but nothing felt right.

“I was just kind of lost in what am I gonna do for the rest of my life, and I didn’t want to do that because it was so superficial,” Ortiz said.

Though she had never considered higher education before, she enrolled at SMC, hoping to eventually start a mental health nonprofit. As she progressed through school, she began dreaming of becoming a congresswoman.

The seventh inning is where things started to fall apart for the Dodgers. After Ohtani gave up two hits to Daulton Varsho and Ernie Clement, he left the game after pitching six innings. Left-handed pitcher Anthony Banda came into the seventh inning with the Blue Jays on second and third with no outs. Andres Gimenez hit a single that allowed Varsho to score. Tyler France followed with a force out at second allowing Clement to score. Banda left the seventh inning having allowed two runs to score and getting one out. The Blue Jays led 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Enrique “K**e” Hernandez started it off with a single. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer was taken out when Shohei Ohtani came up to bat. Blue Jays manager John Schneider looked to his bullpen, brining in Mason Fulharty to face Ohtani.Ohtani doubled, allowing K**e to score and cutting the Blue Jays lead to 4-3. With Ohtani still on second base, Freddie Freeman singled which allowed Ohtani to come home, tying up the game 4-4.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh inning where Guerrero singled and from first base was able to score via a Bo Bichete single. Score: 5-4, Blue Jays take the lead.

Ohtani, seeing this, took matters into his own hands and cracked a 401-foot solo homer to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh.

Before the event, hobbyists and professional skateboarders warmed up together in an impromptu Hellbomb — a play on the word hill bomb, which is rolling downhill at high speed.

Hellbomb covered the median and the majority of the southbound lane on West First Street between Olive and Hill streets, while people warmed up behind a small platform in the northbound lane, adjacent to the event.

Assata Shakur’s impact in Black liberation, anti-colonialism, and in the fight to end racial injustice continues to influence racial justice activists and grassroots organizations. “Rest in Power, Assata Sakur. Revolutionary fighter, writer, exile, elder of the Black liberation, and carrier of freedom,” stated Black Lives Matter, in a tribute to Shakur on X. “We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains,” taught Shakur, a quote famously circulated during racial justice movements.

A large group of around 150 people walked toward the ICE Out of L.A. protest encampment at the detention center after the “No Kings” protest, as has become the norm after major demonstrations downtown.

However, on Oct. 18, the LAPD established its command post for the protest at the detention center, despite headquarters being across the street from City Hall. Police closed the block and established a skirmish line at the corner of North Alameda and East Aliso streets.

Musicians, a small army of women in clown costumes and individuals in inflatable animal suits helped keep the crowd peaceful. People danced, chanted and waved their signs for hours. But tension rose after an LAPD squad car drove into the crowd and hit a protester while trying to reach the command post, despite there being an entrance on Temple Street.
