Santa Monica residents have been dealing with heavy rainfall since last Friday, Nov. 14. The storm system prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for southwest Los Angeles County last Saturday. By Tuesday, Nov. 18, the multiple storms brought 3.48 inches of rain to downtown Los Angeles and 1.18 inches to Santa Monica, making this month the wettest November in 55 years.

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts the current storm will continue through Friday. Residents will finally get a break from a week of rain as NWS predicts a dry weekend and a rainless Thanksgiving week.

Since 2001, more than 140,000 veterans have taken their own lives—46 times the number lost on Sept. 11, 2001. These staggering numbers tell the story of the mental health crisis America’s veterans continue to face. Many veterans survive the battlefield but continue to wage a war within themselves—often not surviving. That makes the efforts of those who support veterans even more impactful.

“Just bringing some joy to people’s day,” said Therapy Dog Pup Program volunteer Josh Greenberg of his heartfelt mission. Greenberg’s therapy dog, Bear, accompanies him to veterans’ events offering comfort and connection to veterans and the public.Volunteers such as Greenberg and Bear are essential assets in America’s ongoing mission to support its veterans during their return to civilian life. Their attendance at the SMC veterans event was a rewarding experience for those involved and stood as a testament to the community’s appreciation for its veterans.

Throughout this past year Veteran and Santa Monica College (SMC) student Justin Ellis-Brooks brought together students from SMC’s clubs like the Black Collegiate’s and surrounding schools to serve the community by providing home cooked meals, free haircuts, and health kits.
When asked where his passion for serving others came from Ellis-Brooks said, “My parents. Growing up serving the families in the communities I frequented. Community is everything.”

The food distribution effort comes as the Trump administration announced that it will only partially fund Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November. However, no timeline was provided for how long it would take to adjust the system to process the reduced amount, only that delays are expected.

During the open A.S. meeting, Moore addressed the event costs and the increased student needs. The requested $50,000 was allotted only to cover a portion of the projected $171,000 cost. The foundation had already started the fundraising efforts, and any remaining funds will support students’ long-term basic needs.

Moore shared the items that had been distributed to students in the past year. She estimated that each student received $100 in groceries and gift cards and that over 2,400 students benefited from a week’s worth of food.

Anticipating disruptions of SNAP payments from the federal government shutdown, Moore said, “Beyond the financial support, the partnership is crucial, knowing together we can inform as many students as possible about this valuable opportunity, especially in the wake of the government shutdown impacting CalFresh benefits for thousands of students.”

After second guessing if she wanted to continue playing volleyball after high school, Whitlock flew into California from Washington to begin her college career in July. Starting out playing at the YMCA in the second grade, and moving up to club volleyball in the sixth grade, Whitlock was destined to continue her game at a high level.

During her last season at Washington Volleyball Club Academy, Whitlock’s sole position was libero. Entering SMC, she was placed back in a position to kill the ball rather than digging it up.

Starting in 19 games this season, Whitlock upholds 174 kills with 164 digs trailing right behind. Overall, her kills per set are 2.64, and are impactful for her team.
