I shared these thoughts about Steve and the show on today's broadcast. I wanted to share them here as well as take the opportunity to thank the loyal listeners for your support of Steve over the last 17 years of broadcasts, and for your support of me for the last ten.
Thank you.
Harry
My affiliation with The Drive and Steve Jaxon goes back ten years, when David Templeton, who’d hosted a theatre segment since the show’s debut 17 years ago, decided to pivot from covering theatre to dedicating more of his time to writing his own plays. David introduced me to Steve and suggested I take over the segment. Steve agreed, and as he said many times since then, he’s regretted that decision ever since. I’m pretty sure he’s kidding.
After hosting a weekly theatre segment for six years, I was asked to step into the role of co-host, which I did for the last two years of the program’s run on that other station. During my time as co-host, I had the opportunity to interview many incredible people, from politicians like former White House Counsel John Dean, Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis, to congressmen Jared Huffman and Mike Thompson and scores of North Bay county and municipal politicos.
I was also able to conduct some incredible interviews with filmmakers like Oliver Stone, music and film producer Lou Adler, and musician Bobby Colomby from Blood, Sweat, and Tears.
Regular guests like Mel Goodman, Matthew Capucci, Joel Selvin, Clark Wolf, and CW Nevius always made for good, informative conversations, which, to me, is what this show has always been about.
Most importantly, I’ve been able to bring increased awareness to the plethora of live theatre available here in the North Bay. There has been no bigger champion of the arts in this community than Steve Jaxon. Whether it was music, comedy, literature, dance, or theatre, artists always had a place to come and promote their projects. That place was The Drive with Steve Jaxon. The artistic community knows and recognizes the contribution Steve has made to the success of their endeavors.
Now I’ve not been privy to the conversations that were held about what will succeed this program, but I have been asked to continue to contribute a theatre segment which I will. Continuing to support the arts in these troubling times is an absolute necessity.
So, in conclusion, I want to say ‘Thank You’ to Steve. For the opportunity, for the camaraderie, and for all the beer and wine I got co-hosting the Brew Ha Ha and California Wine Country.
Looking back at the past ten years, I have to be totally honest and say it wasn't always easy and it wasn't always fun.
But it was (mostly.) ;-)
