25 years ago, Candice Brown-McElyea, founder and CEO of One Eight Oh PR, had the opportunity to cover a presidential visit at Emma E. Booker Elementary School. However, within minutes, she found herself covering the devastating attacks of 9/11.

Controversial take: There are a few things that are a dead giveaway that you have an old and antiquated PR strategy. One is having these words in your press release and/or your email subject line to reporters: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.

Ditch the dated phrase and use your press release title as the email subject and watch those press inquiries increase.

If you’re sending out a press release, make sure you have someone available to talk to reporters who want to dig deeper - like that day! Nothing is worse than missing an opportunity for a great mention because no one is available to talk further about your great company news.

Our CEO Candice Brown-McElyea started her career in TV news. After graduating from the University of Florida College of Journalism, she worked in New York, Maryland and Florida. While working for SNN6 in 2001, she reported on the September 11 attacks from Emma E Booker Elementary School where President George W Bush was when he first learned about the tragic events of the day. Coming up over the next few weeks leading up to the 25th anniversary, ABC7 will run a series about Sarasota’s many eerie connections to the terrorist attacks, including a panel interview with many reporters who were there that day. Stay tuned to learn more!
