According to renowned urbanist Brent Toderian, it's not the height of a building that really matters.

“The conversation around building height tends to be pretty simplistic. ‘How many floors does the building have?’" he says. "But what’s more important is how the building is designed. Taller, slimmer buildings can have a much lighter impact on the street than shorter, bulkier ones that create a wall. Sarasota has a huge disconnect between the types of developments being built and the actual needs of the community.”

In certain academic circles, there’s a fierce debate over which fruit Eve gave Adam in the Garden of Eden. The King James Bible asserted it was an apple. Rabbis have claimed it was a grape turned into boozy wine, while other scholars have argued it was likely more regional fruit like pomegranates, figs or tamarinds. But there is only one fruit worth getting kicked out of paradise for: the mango.

More than 140 years ago, some of the first mango trees in America were established in Bradenton.

Keep Manatee Beautiful is looking for 300 volunteers to help plant sea oats along the dunes of Anna Maria Island in an effort to shore up the natural protections between the island and the water.

“Most people live here because of the environment," Keep Manatee Beautiful executive director Jennifer Hoffman says. "The only way we can continue to have this amazing place is to continue to work to save it.”

In January 2018, Emily Meinke was at home in Sarasota watching the news coverage of the sentencing of former U.S. Olympic doctor Larry Nassar, who had just been convicted after sexually abusing gymnasts and other female athletes for more than 20 years under the guise of performing medical treatment.

Meinke, 44, had followed the case closely, after the first accusations against Nassar emerged in 2016, but when she recognized a former teammate from her childhood training days in the world of elite gymnastics in Michigan, she knew it was time to tell her story, too. A few days later, she was on a plane to Michigan to take her place in court in front of Nassar and the television cameras. “I knew it was going to be life-changing,” she says. Here's her story.

“A lot of people don’t disclose an assault because the legal system is so intimidating. Our goal is to make survivors feel safe so that more people are held accountable.”
