Thrilled that will be joining us for the Akwesasne Freedom School Benefit! deerlady is Mali Obomsawin of Odanak First Nation and Magdelena Abrego, a Chicago-born guitarist whose parents immigrated from Mexico and Puerto Rico. “Expansive electric guitars and bass withhold and unleash with the control of two refined experimental, genre-bending instrumentalists.” They build worlds that are at once urgent and timeless, carrying stories of sovereignty, resistance, and beauty.

Formed to honor traditional Haudenosaunee song traditions, they carry forward the spirit of their community with strength, beauty, and deep cultural knowledge. An evening of music, food, and community rooted in Indigenous sovereignty, cultural revitalization, and collective support.

This annual benefit uplifts the Akwesasne Freedom School — a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) language immersion school located in Akwesasne Territory. Founded and operated by the community, the school receives no state or federal funding, relying on grassroots support to carry out its mission of Indigenous-led education, language renewal, and land-based lifeways.

Today, the 22-year-old singer, songwriter, and poet Hataałii releases 𝙄’𝙡𝙡 𝘽𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙, an unvarnished and intimate collection of wintry folk-country, via Panther Mountain. Though still shaded by his sideways poeticism, 𝙄’𝙡𝙡 𝘽𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 is Hataałii at his most earnest — elegant elegies for burnt-out romantics in various states of heartbreak.

Pre-order the limited-edition 𝙄’𝙡𝙡 𝘽𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 vinyl LP on the Panther Mountain Bandcamp store. Only 150 copies are available and they will ship in June 2025.
