SPOTLIGHT ON THE DOGS OF SAUGERTIES

We asked each of the 35 artists who designed a dog for the "Barkin' Around Saugerties" sidewalk art display to tell the story of their creation. Introducing "Rescue Me" by artist William Kimble.

"It was my aim to do an all-American hound dog, that was obviously a dog..... And to illustrate the need to support the rescue of animals.....hence the name " RESCUE ME ". I hope that is the
way it is received"

The need to rescue and adopt dogs from shelters was a theme behind many of the beautiful dogs that are part of this display. William Kimble's dog not only portrays this message, but the name of the dog says it all. You can view "RESCUE ME" in front of its sponsor, Naccarato Insurance. You can bid on the dog today online on our website, www.discoversaugerties.com, or you can buy tickets to our live auction at SPAF on September 14. Tickets are on sale on our website or at Smith Hardware and Town and Country Liquors.

An Air Quality Advisory has been issued for our region today, Wednesday, August 6 ⚠️ The average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Ulster County is forecasted to reach over 100, which falls into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category.

An AQI in this range may affect people with heart or lung conditions, older adults, children, and teens. These groups are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activity and reduce the amount of time spent outside.

Check the AQI near you throughout the day at www.airnow.gov.

Tick season is in full swing in New York—and the risk of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases is a growing concern.

Due to climate change, warmer winters and longer springs and falls are creating ideal conditions for ticks to thrive. As temperatures rise, ticks—and the animals they travel on, like deer and mice—are surviving in greater numbers and expanding into new areas.
Whether you’re hiking, gardening, or just enjoying the outdoors, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself.

Our stewards—experts in staying safe while working in nature—recommend these tips:
✅ Dress smart: Wear long sleeves, pants, and light colors to spot ticks easily
✅ Stick to the trails: Stay away from tall grass.
✅ Check for ticks: Do a full-body check after being outdoors
✅ Shower soon after: It helps wash off ticks before they attach
✅ Protect your pets: Use vet recommended tick protection
✅ Toss your clothes in the dryer: 10–20 minutes on high heat can get rid of any ticks that hitched a ride (a lint roller works great too!)

A huge thank you goes out to Valarie from Nothing But Love Canine Foundation. She donated oxygen masks for pets to be carried on our ambulances. We all know our pets are part of our families and Valarie wants to make sure they are treated like family in case of an emergency. Thank you so much Valarie, the world needs more people like you. 💜
