“Mooing from the cows calls me home” are words that will stick with Daisy Zimmermann. She heard this phrase, which she had originally created for her dairy elevator speech, repeated during the announcement video naming her as a finalist for Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

“It’s pretty crazy; I did not think I was going to get a finalist position my first year (attending May Leadership Event),” Zimmermann said. “I started crying when they announced that I was a finalist.”

Zimmermann, the daughter of Mike and Lori Zimmermann, is the oldest of her four siblings — Joe, Bethany, Holly and Tina. The family dairy farms near Sauk Centre, milking 125 cows in a double-8 parlor.

In the pasture with the livestock or in the dirt arena in a saddle is where dairy farmer James Maus can often be found. Horseback is his preferred approach to cover ground on and off his farm.

James and his wife, Jenn, milk a herd of 90 Holsteins on their farm near Osakis. The couple’s four children — Lynnea, Justin, Damian and Alex — help with chores such as milking and feeding the cattle, scraping the barn, and hauling manure, while the oldest two also hold full-time jobs of their own.

The year 2009 brought tragedy, change and unexpected blessings for the family when they nearly lost everything in a barn fire.

Since 1917, Hereford cattle have roamed the land owned by the Klucas and Schafer families in Sibley and Renville County. Lester “Les” and Kathleen Schafer bought the Klucas family farm in 1962, where they have made raising a family and tending to cattle their primary objective since.

John Schafer, the couple’s only son, found his cattleman calling early on while working the gates on the farm alongside his father from a young age. John was followed by three sisters: Carla, Laurie and Mary.

“Up until one year ago, Dad worked the head gate when we were processing cattle,” John said. “He’s put a lot of years in. … Probably nobody else in the world has spent more years performance testing than what Dad has. I hope to break his record.”
