The eye black matched the lashes Sunday as a group of women owning and/or representing small businesses came together for a fun-filled game of football at Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School in Sauk Rapids — and, it was all for a good cause.

In its inaugural year, the She Means Business Powder-Puff Matchup raised approximately $1,500 for INDY Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting people with cancer. Funds were generated through pay-to-play sponsorships, at-will admittance donations, and food sales generated through Under the Hood Grill & Catering and AHTA Cakes.

The event, which brought together over 40 Central Minnesota small businesses, was coordinated by Jenn Sutliffe and Jordan Pfeninger, owners of Just Peachy Collective. Sutliffe also owns James Maven Social, a marketing company.

As the rain poured down, so too did the points in favor of the Annandale Cardinals.

The reigning Class AAA state champions were too much for the Foley Falcons football team to handle, delivering several big plays and playing stout defense in a 41-7 victory Sept. 18 at Tech High School in St. Cloud.

Playing hard does not always end in the desired result. Such is the nature of athletics.

The Sauk Rapids-Rice football team provided a textbook example of leaving it all on the field Sept. 18, yet the Storm fell painfully short of putting a notch in the win column. Despite a balanced offense and perhaps its best defensive effort in recent memory, Brainerd pulled off a late scoring drive and held on for a homecoming-spoiling 21-18 victory at rain-soaked Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School Stadium in Sauk Rapids.

Even as they began the season with a tournament victory in Royalton, the Foley Falcons volleyball team has felt out of sync, struggling to regain a form similar to last year’s 19-win squad.

Fresh off a stunning 3-0 defeat to the Milaca Wolves Sept. 3 at Milaca High School in Milaca, the Falcons finally showcased that level again on their home court Sept. 8, downing the Royalton Royals 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 26-24) at Foley High School in Foley.

Keeping the offense in a state of forward motion was senior setter Kylie Storkamp, who earned set assist No. 1,000 for her career late in the final set and was given a standing ovation by the packed gymnasium.
