Valued readers,

In 2015, on the heels of the death of Roland Doroff, Star Publications purchased the Sauk Rapids Herald. Three years later, we acquired Benton County News as Ron Youso put down the pen and retired.

For 10 years, our dedicated staff has shared the heartbeat of Benton County through coverage of countless community events; city, county, church and school happenings; area athletics; and the everyday but important stories of people like you and me.

Today, we pledge to continue that effort, but with some changes.

Beginning Dec. 6, the Sauk Rapids Herald and Benton County News will become one. This county-wide publication — Benton County Herald — will serve the same communities we do now but with additional coverage to our county borders.

Those living in the zip codes of Foley, Gilman and Oak Park will have access to the paper through the same requester format that has been provided to Sauk Rapids and Rice residents since 2018. Simply provide your name, address, phone number and email, and an edition can be delivered to your mailbox in print and/or online at no charge.

The paper will be published and delivered Saturdays, and Benton County Herald will continue to have a physical office with walk-in access in Sauk Rapids. I will remain the publication’s editor, with Tim Hennagir, Evan Michealson, Tom Fenton and other Star Publications staff members providing your county coverage.

This decision will enable us to continue the quality reporting you’ve grown to know.

Star Publications is committed to being the best community newspaper this area has to offer. If at any time you have suggestions, story leads, comments or concerns, we want to hear them. Please email [email protected].

After all, sharing your stories and supporting your businesses is what keeps print alive in Benton County.

Sincerely,

Natasha Barber on behalf of the

Star Publications ownership team

Josie Anderson does not necessarily see herself as a morning person, but the Sauk Rapids-Rice High School junior obviously was ready for her early wakeup call Nov. 8.

Anderson did not require coffee or an energy drink to get going for the 8:30 a.m. start time for the consolation championship of the Minnesota State High School League Class AAA Girls Volleyball State Tournament; instead, she fed off her teammates’ contagious energy.

Walz is state champion

BY TOM FENTON
STAFF WRITER

Kate Walz made history for the Sauk Rapids-Rice girls swimming and diving program.

Walz, a sophomore, became the school’s first girls individual state champion by winning the 100-yard breaststroke at the Minnesota State High School League Class A Meet Nov. 15 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.

Walz narrowly won the event with a time of 1 minute, 3.9 seconds to win the title over Merry Miller of Visitation by 0.04 seconds. Walz also placed fifth in the 200 individual medley, helping the Storm to a seventh-place finish in the team standings.

Other SRR state finals results include:

The 200 medley relay team of Ally Lucas, Walz, Madi Miller and Mya Miller place third; Esme Grabinski placed ninth in diving; the 200 freestyle relay team of Ava Erdmann, Lucas, Walz and Mya Miller placed seventh; and Lucas placed 14th in the 100 backstroke. Lucas added a 14th-place finish in the 100 backstroke.

Joyce and Spencer Linn have a long-standing tie to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.

Each November, the mother-son financial services duo dive deeply into co-sponsorship duties associated with the non-profit organization’s big holiday collection effort in the St. Cloud area.

Joyce is a regional vice president, and Spencer is a senior regional leader with Primerica Financial Services of Sauk Rapids. Their office is a short walk from the main entrance of Coborn’s Marketplace, the annual site of the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign, which began Nov. 7.

Consolation champs!

BY TOM FENTON
STAFF WRITER

The Sauk Rapids-Rice volleyball team left St. Paul filled with both smiles and tears. The smiles for what they accomplished and the tears the experience was over.

The Storm proved they were state tournament-trophy worthy, dispatching of Mahtomedi in three sets to win the consolation title at the Minnesota State High School League Class AAA State Tournament Nov. 8 at Grand Casino Arena.

Scores were 25-15, 28-26, 25-9.

Josie Anderson had 16 kills, Emma Sundby had 16 set assists and Aubrey Marketon had 13. Claire Rogholt had a team-best 11 blocks.

The Storm finished the season 27-3.
