Almost a month after the 9/11 attacks, workers searching through the ruins of Ground Zero discovered something still alive beneath the devastation, a badly damaged Callery pear tree.

Its roots were snapped, its branches burned and broken, and much of the tree had been destroyed. But instead of cutting it down, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation rescued it and spent years carefully nursing it back to health.

Against the odds, the tree survived.

In December 2010, it was returned to the World Trade Center site and replanted at the 9/11 Memorial.

Today, known as the “Survivor Tree,” its old scars remain visible beneath its healthy new growth, a living symbol that even after unimaginable destruction, life can begin again.
