Closing a credit card with a good payment history could hurt your credit score because the length of credit represents 15% of your overall credit score. So, if you have credit cards that you have not used, start using them by making small purchases, and then paying them off before your monthly bill cycles. FICO likes to see good payment history, and if you stop making payments because you are not using the credit card, two things could happen. One, the credit issuer could close your credit card, and this will impact your score, and the FICO score could be impacted because your monthly payment history has stopped.
