A lot of people talk about the heartbreak of watching your child go through hard things.

But no one talks about the heartbreak of being the one they trust most… and still having to help hold them through it.

The tests.
The procedures.
The moments that make them cry for you while you’re doing everything you can to help them.

Some parts of parenting hurt in ways you never knew existed. 💔

We talk a lot about the medical moms.

But today is for the medical dads.

The ones who silently absorb the stress of it all.

The ones who stay strong when their family needs them most.

The ones who advocate fiercely, love deeply, and carry more than most people will ever see.

To the medical dads

We see you.

Happy Father’s Day. 💙

When they say, “in sickness and in health,” they don’t always mean your spouse.

Sometimes they mean your child.

The child whose diagnosis changed the course of your family’s life.

Raising a medically complex child means loving someone through sickness every single day.

And if you’re lucky, you have a spouse beside you doing the same.

There may come a time in your adult life when you become the parent of a medically complex child.

When that happens, learn to trust your instincts.

You spend more hours with your child than any doctor ever will.

You’ll notice the subtle changes, the symptoms that don’t fit, the look in their eyes when something isn’t right.

That doesn’t mean rejecting medical advice. It
means speaking up when your gut tells you something is being missed.

Ask the question.
Request the test.
Get the second opinion.
Go back if you’re still concerned.

Many parents of medically complex children can tell you about the time they were told everything was fine, only to discover later that their concerns were valid.

You don’t have to choose between science and intuition.

The best outcomes often happen when parents and providers work together.

Most parents never imagine they’ll learn the fastest route to the emergency department.

They don’t know which elevator goes to the PICU.
They don’t know the smell of hospital hallways at 2am.
They don’t know what it’s like to wait for test results that could change everything.

And I hope they never do.

Because what a privilege it is to not know your way around a children’s hospital.

And what a privilege it is to have a healthy child.
