WAVERLY — In a Saturday night clash of the defending 2A PIAA state champions and the 2023 NYSPHSAA Class C state champs, it fittingly came down to one play late in the fourth quarter.

Waverly, which never trailed all night in its home stadium, had seen its 14-0 lead get diminished to just a one-point advantage when Troy’s Brendan Gilliland scored from 12 yards out with 1:14 to play to cap off a long 77-yard drive.

Feeding off the momentum, head coach Jim Smith and his Trojans decided to go for two and steal a late lead, but this time the Waverly defense met the challenge and stuffed Gilliland in the backfield.
