RustyVair: Meet Us!

Hello again, fellow adventurers!

Now that you’ve met RustyVair, it’s time you meet the humans behind the wheel (and the snacks).

We’re Val and Sasha, and these are our two little explorers — always ready with a curious question, a giggle, or a trail mix in hand.

Val: lifelong Corvair fan, mechanic, and your go-to guy when something needs fixing (or when you need to figure out why the engine is making that weird noise).
Sasha: travel enthusiast, nature lover, and champion of turning every tiny adventure into a full-blown memory.

Why we travel
For us, travel isn’t just about seeing new places — it’s about creating memories that stick. It’s about teaching our kids to wake up to the sound of birds instead of alarms, to explore deserts, beaches, and forests with wonder, and to understand that the world is bigger, wilder, and more beautiful than any screen could show.

With RustyVair, we get the perfect home on wheels — a place to sleep, eat, laugh, and grow together while seeing the world at our own pace. Every mile we drive is a story waiting to happen. Every campfire, every sunrise, every little “first” for our kids becomes part of our family story.

We’re so excited to share these adventures with you — the ups, the “oops” moments, and the unforgettable sunsets.

RustyVair: Our Story Begins

Welcome to the adventure!
We’re Val, Sasha, and our two little explorers — and this is the story of our big rusty Corvair Greenbrier van with an even bigger heart.

RustyVair started only a couple miles from Val's childhood home in Orange, CA. One day, a high-top Greenbrier popped up for sale at a shop — sun-faded, engine-less, and had been sitting quietly in the same yard since the 1980s. The family that owned it used to road-trip across the country in it when they were kids, camping with their parents and making the kind of memories that stick with you forever. After their parents passed and the van sat untouched for decades, they wanted someone who would give it a new life.

Enter Val, with his lifelong love for Corvairs, and Sasha, with her passion for travel, family adventures, and nature.
The moment we saw it, we knew: this was the perfect way to combine our passions and build something magical for our growing family.

But… RustyVair needed everything.
No engine.
No working systems.
A full mechanical rebirth was ahead.

Val spent nearly a year wrenching on the van between other Corvair projects — slowly bringing the Greenbrier back from its long sleep. And then, in January 2024, everything shifted. While renting an Airbnb in St. George, Utah, and welcoming our second baby into the world, we made the decision:
It was time to fully commit and bring RustyVair back to life.

And we knew exactly where to do it.

🌵 Joshua Tree.
A special place for us — it’s where we first met in 2021 while hiking the 49 Palms Oasis trail. Returning there to revive RustyVair felt symbolic, grounding, and perfect. With Corvair legend Dan Shelby close by, Val had just enough support (and just enough Corvair energy) to make the dream possible.

Now the journey begins — a rebuilt family campervan, endless desert sunsets, two tiny adventurers, and a lot of miles ahead.

Thank you for being here. We can’t wait to share our travels, our DIY stories, and the memories we’re making in our beloved RustyVair.
