A resort employee offered my daughter a free glass-bottom boat ride โ 45 minutes later, the captain returned with her pink backpack.
It was our FIRST real vacation in years.
My twelve-year-old daughter, Lily, had spent the entire morning staring at the glass-bottom boats leaving the resort pier.
"They can actually see fish through the floor!" she kept saying.
The tickets were EXPENSIVE, so I'd already told her we'd try another day.
Then a young resort employee approached us.
"We had a cancellation," he said. "There's ONE FREE seat if she'd like it."
Lily practically jumped with excitement.
The trip was supposed to last thirty minutes.
I watched her climb aboard, her bright pink backpack over one shoulder, and waved as the boat disappeared around the bay.
Thirty minutes passed.
Then forty.
At forty-five, I finally saw the boat returning.
Relief washed over me.
Until it got closer.
Lily wasn't standing at the railing.
I scanned every passenger.
NOTHING.
Then the captain stepped onto the pier...
holding her PINK BACKPACK.
I ran toward him.
"Where's my daughter?"
His face changed.
"Your daughter?"
"The girl with that bag!"
He stared at me.
Then at the backpack.
"Ma'am... there were NO CHILDREN on my boat."
My blood went cold.
"I WATCHED her get on!"
He immediately called resort security.
Within minutes, employees were running across the pier while I screamed Lily's name.
Then the captain SUDDENLY unzipped her backpack.
Inside were her sunglasses.
Her phone.
Her room key.
And something I'd NEVER seen before.
A second resort wristband.
Black.
The captain FROZE when he saw it.
"Where did she get this?"
"I don't know!"
He grabbed his radio.
"Shut down the marina. NOW."
