The Historic Hudson Hoosic Rivers Partnership announced the opening of the Champlain Canal Region Gateway Visitors Center (GVC), located at 28 Ferry Street, Schuylerville, on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 10am.
The GVC is the product of a collaborative effort of non-profit and federal, state and local governments to introduce locals and travelers alike to the historically significant and culturally unique Champlain Canal Region of Lakes to Locks Passage. Centrally located along the Champlain Canalway and Empire State Trail systems, the GVC serves as an orientation point for visitors to explore communities in Rensselaer, Saratoga and Washington Counties. By boat, by car, by bicycle or even by foot, the Gateway Visitors Center directs visitors to the region’s cultural, natural, historical and recreational destinations and defines the narrative that links these destinations together.
The GVC will be open from 10am – 3pm Thursday through Sunday throughout the summer and fall. A ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration, to which all are invited, will be announced.
The GVC is a timber frame structure, inspired by the architectural stylings of the nearby Schuyler House, and was completed in part, by the Timber Framers Guild. The Timber Framers Guild is dedicated to the art and science of Timber Framing and uses timber framing workshops to educate volunteers and the public in timber framing as they build and raise a timber frame structure for a local community.
The Historic Hudson – Hoosic Partnership’s mission is to preserve, enhance and develop the historic, agricultural, scenic, natural and recreational resources and the significant waterways within the Partnership region. Through the tradition of municipal home rule, the Partnership fosters collaborative projects with pertinent non-profit and governmental entities with an emphasis on both agricultural and open space protection, economic and tourism development, and the protection and interpretation of our natural and cultural heritage.
Funding for the project came from New York State and Federal grants, including generous support and contributions from the Saratoga County IDA, Saratoga County, and the local business community.
