I was in Fourth Grade when I was asked to write an essay with the prompt “What makes a Hero?”
At the time, I wrote about the Doctor who was treating my mother for her cancer. It was the first time I considered the question, and that question has been stewing in my mind ever since. I won the contest and perhaps it was fate that on our way home from the big ceremony where the winners was announced that my Dad took me to a Comic Book Store for the first time.
That was 25 years ago. Since then I spent over ten years managing a comic book shop and twice that time playing and running Roleplaying games of all types. I suppose it was inevitable that those twin loves would come together in a single form, Union City Heroes. This is the ultimate passion project for me and of course it is guided by that same fundamental question that I was first posed in fourth grade; What makes a Hero?
In Union City Heroes, every player will have to answer that question themselves. In our increasingly complicated and fraught world we all have to examine what we consider heroic and, hopefully, act heroically in our everyday lives. Every superhero lives by a moral code that they craft for themselves and display in the actions they take. They are each a statement of what they perceive truth and justice to be.
