🛑Please stop and read this! If you had a kid that graduated from high school during Covid and they didn’t get to have an actual graduation, prom, have a homecoming etc then will probably resonate with you. Here’s my perspective on my parenting and some of the mistakes I’ve made. More importantly some of the things that I have learned.
My son went to NAU after high school still in the heart of Covid and sat in a dorm room every day doing classes from his computer over zoom. Not one class was an in person class. He wasn’t able to go to any spot on campus to hang out, there was a little opportunity to mingle amongst students and this created a very negative environment for him, causing him to get really down on himself.

To be perfectly honest I’m not even sure if he really ever wanted to even go to NAU but because that’s where I went, I wanted him to go there and I wanted him to join the same fraternity as I was in and do all the things that I did without really even asking him what he wanted.

When he finished his first year, we brought him home and let him take some time to soul-search and really see what he may want to do. Something that would make him happy, not me. I got to a point where I realized we are not the same person and that he can do far greater things than I could but ultimately he had to find what would make him happy.

So together we started diving into different non traditional education opportunities. He’s always been really into music, building things, and because of video games he was also really good at computers. Face it parents ALL kids play video games now. He also always had a very artistic sort of mindset. So one day we came across a school called the Conservatory of recording arts and science . It just happened to be in Gilbert and Tempe. We went for a visit and immediately realized that he had found his home and more importantly his people.

Well today he finished his last day .edu and is moving to LA in a week to start a 12 week internship that will finalize his degree.

Watching your children in pain is one of the most difficult things to deal with as a parent. The turn around this kid has made is beyond remarkable and I can’t even begin to explain how proud I am of him.

‼️He finished with a 3.8 GPA and a 96% attendance‼️
