Point Lobos doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Most people treat it as a quick stop on the way to Big Sur — or skip it entirely. Both are mistakes.

Half a day here with your kids will be one of the best decisions you make on a California trip. The wildlife is everywhere, the trails are manageable for every age, and the water color at China Cove genuinely doesn’t look real.

A few things worth knowing before you go: arrive early, the lot fills fast. And don’t rush — this is one of those places where the kids who are usually begging to leave will be the ones asking to stay longer.

We paired it with an afternoon in Carmel and it made for a perfect day.

Comment CARMEL and I’ll send you our full 4-day Carmel and Big Sur family itinerary straight to your DMs.

Save this before your California trip.

We ended our Portugal trip in Lisbon. But ask any one of us which part we’d go back to tomorrow — and we’d all say the same thing: the Algarve.

The cliffs. The caves. The beaches that don’t look real. The towns that still feel like Portugal and not a tourist postcard. Our teen and tween were fully present the entire time, and that alone made it one of our best family trips ever.

Here’s where to focus your time if you go with older kids:

🏖️ Lagos — Start here. Ponta da Piedade’s cliffs and grottos are a non-negotiable. Kayak in if you can.

🌊 Benagil Cave — Book a boat tour early. This is the moment that gets teens off their phones and genuinely speechless.

🪨 Carvoeiro — Smaller, slower, and completely charming. Great for families who want to actually breathe.

🌅 Tavira — Skip the crowds and come here. Authentic, beautiful, and wildly underrated.

The Algarve works for families with older kids because it gives everyone something. Adventure, beauty, good food, and enough independence that teens don’t feel like they’re on a little kid vacation.

Save this if Portugal is on your family’s radar. And drop a 🇵🇹 below if you’ve been — I want to know if your kids loved it as much as ours did.
