Just before 12:30 PM, Pittston Township Fire Department Rescue and Jenkins Township Fire Dept. Engine along with Pittston Township Ambulance Association and Greater Pittston Regional Ambulance were dispatched to the area of the Knights Inn on Route 315 for a car vs a utility pole. Calls quickly came into the 911 center reporting the car being on fire and live power lines being down on it. Within minutes a massive column of black smoke was seen throughout the area. City of Pittston Bureau of Fire Engine 3 was dispatched to assist due to the working car fire. When crews arrived on scene they found the driver self extricated from the car and multiple high voltage lines down and on fire preventing them from putting any water on the fire until PPL turned it off. Oil/fuel that was on fire started running through the parking lot at one point forcing command to request a full Commercial Structure Fire Box due the risk of the motel going up as well, all while everyone's hands were still tied by high voltage lines being down and energized. Around 12:50pm PPL finally cut power allowing responders to begin to extinguish the fire. Thankfully, there was no extension to the building, and only heat damage to one other vehicle. Hazards of running foam, fuel, and oil from both the car and the PPL Transformers were contained with booms and speedy dry to prevent runoff into storm drains. On the structure box, Avoca Fire Department, Excelsior Hose co. #2 Duryea Pa. and Hughestown Emergency Services responded to assist. The incident snarled traffic at a busy intersection with Interstates 81 and 476 and Route 315.

Bear Creek Twp Vol Fire / Rescue along with Laurel Run VFD, Kingston/FF Rescue, Thornhurst VFD, the Luzerne County Back Mountain Tanker Task Force, Laflin Rescue and Plains Township EMS responded to a well involved house fire in Laurel Brook Estates on Monday Afternoon. A large black column of smoke was visible on the mountain from across the valley just after the call was dispatched, and when crews arrived on scene the roof had already collapsed into the second floor, with propane cylinders going off and heavy fire conditions throughout making it very dangerous to make any sort of interior attack due to the lightweight and fast burning nature of newer construction homes.

If you live in a town protected by a volunteer fire department—or even in communities like Hanover, Hazleton, Kingston/Forty Fort, or Nanticoke, which rely on a combination of career and volunteer firefighters—please consider getting involved. Even helping with fundraisers or lending a hand around the station makes a difference.

In Luzerne County, Wilkes-Barre City and Plains Township are the only municipalities without some form of volunteer department. In Lackawanna County, the only exceptions are Scranton and Dunmore. Everywhere else, it’s your neighbors, friends, and co-workers who answer the call when emergencies strike. Unfortunately, the number of volunteer firefighters continues to dwindle every year.

Contact your local fire department today and ask how you can help—whether it’s by joining the ranks or supporting their efforts in other ways. Your involvement matters.

Scranton Firefighters on C-Shift had just cleared a possible structure fire in West Scranton when the city’s remaining in-service companies—Engines 2 and 10 and Truck 2—were dispatched to the 300 block of Pittston Avenue for a vehicle fire threatening a nearby structure. With the other companies close by, they also responded after the large column of smoke was visible for miles around indicating a lot more than just a car was on fire.

Engine 4 arrived to find heavy fire showing from the end of a block-long row of homes, with a large crowd forming and reporting that a young child was trapped inside. A second alarm was struck, bringing all on-duty firefighters from both Scranton and Dunmore to the scene. Off-duty personnel were called in to staff reserve engines for coverage elsewhere.

Crews quickly located the child outside with family members, confirming no entrapment. However, during operations a bystander broke through the fire line, scaled a fire department ladder, and began breaking windows in an attempt to search for the child—who was already safe. This reckless act not only caused injuries to the individual but also endangered firefighters inside by creating additional airflow that could have rapidly fed the fire. Scranton Police removed the person, briefly taking them into custody before releasing them at the scene.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire’s spread a short distance down the row, though they battled stubborn hotspots in three adjacent homes along Pittston Avenue and one on Orchard Street. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.

On Saturday night the Hazleton Fire Department along with numerous mutual aid partners battled a fire at the old St. Paul's United Methodist Church on West Green Street. First arriving units had heavy fire through the roof of the 3 story church leading to 1 tower ladder, 3 ladders and 1 telesquirt being placed into operation with an extensive water supply setup allowing such a large amount of water to flow simultaneously.
