On Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at 7:38 PM, Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Company Rescue 29 was dispatched along with Moscow Ambulance and Maplewood Quick Response to Interstate 84 westbound near Mile Marker 12 for a report of a vehicle into a bridge.
Rescue 29 responded with lights and sirens, and arrived on scene at 7:52 PM, locating the incident in Wayne County near Mile Marker 13.0. Crews found a single-vehicle crash with the vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway. Rescue 29 positioned on the shoulder with emergency lights activated while first responders provided care to the occupants.
At approximately 7:55 PM, as personnel were tending to the injured and 68 Quick Response was approaching, Rescue 29 was struck by a passing full-size car that lost control on the icy roadway. Fortunately, no first responders were injured.
The secondary crash triggered a chain reaction involving additional vehicles. Due to severe black icing conditions, the highway was immediately shut down, and PennDOT was requested to respond. Rescue 29 sustained damage to the rear of the apparatus.
Additional units from Elmhurst-Roaring Brook Fire Company and Covington Ambulance were requested to the scene to assist, and first responders continued to provide care to the occupants of both the initial and secondary accidents.
Hamlin Fire & Resue was requested to shut down Interstate 84 at Exit 17. Penndot arrived on scene at 9:12 PM to salt the roadway. The road was slowly reopened.
While apparatus can be repaired, we are grateful that none of our volunteers were injured.
A sincere thank you to Milewski Towing & Recovery Service for their assistance on scene, and to everyone who has reached out to check on our crew.
Please remember, if you see emergency vehicles on the side of the roadway, slow down and move over. We want to make it home to our families just as much as you want to get to your destination. Flashing emergency lights mean someone needs help. Please give us the space to do our job safely.
