Newton’s gravity worked incredibly well.
But there was one problem: Mercury.
Its orbit didn’t behave exactly the way Newton’s theory predicted. For decades, scientists tried to figure out why.
Then Einstein changed our understanding of gravity completely.
Gravity wasn’t simply a force pulling objects together. In general relativity, mass curves spacetime, and objects follow that curved geometry.
One of the most dramatic early tests came during the 1919 solar eclipse, when astronomers measured the apparent positions of stars near the Sun, providing evidence that light was being deflected as Einstein predicted.
And that strange motion of Mercury?
General relativity explained that too.
