Five years after a master plan was developed, the Port of Astoria Commissioners finally approved a 40-year “master lease” agreement on Tuesday, May 19. This is a major step in realizing the port’s Waterfront Development Master Plan.

Recovery efforts are ongoing in Longview, Washington after an implosion at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company. Currently, two people have been reported dead. In addition, seven employees and a firefighter were injured in the blast and nine are still missing, according to the Longview Fire Department.

PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center spokesperson Jim Murez said nine people had been evaluated at the center. “Four were transferred to regional hospitals, three were discharged, one is in fair condition and one patient is deceased,” he said. “Injuries ranged from mild to severe with chemical skin burns, and eye and airway irritation.”

On Friday, a 35-year-old man died after jumping off the Astoria Bridge. His death has opened up a conversation about what safety measures might be taken to prevent future tragedies. While Oregon Department of Transportation and local law enforcement officials weigh practical measures and their costs, health professionals say prevention is a role the entire community can take on.

“Everyone can play a role in supporting the mental health and well-being of our community members,” said CBH Clinical Operations Officer Stacy Lorette in an email to The Astorian. “Su***de prevention and mental wellness are collective responsibilities, and we encourage everyone to seek additional training and become involved.”
