The Duwamish River is Seattle’s only river and was heavily polluted for decades.
The DWG helps fund and manage cleanup projects to restore it for nearby families, wildlife, and future development.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA for short, and the members of the Lower Duwamish Waterway Group, which includes King County, the City of Seattle, and Boeing, have begun sediment cleanup of the Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund site. This project will address sediment pollution and help enhance the health of the Lower Duwamish Waterway.
The five-mile long Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund site is divided into upper, middle, and lower reaches, each with its own design and schedule.
Construction activities began in the upper reach, the most upstream two miles of the Superfund site, in November 2024. After the upper reach cleanup work is completed, cleanup work will continue downstream toward the south end of Harbor Island, moving into the middle and lower reaches.
The Lower Duwamish Waterway Group is hosting a community office hour on November 18 from 5-7 p.m. at the South Park Library. This is your chance to stop by and ask questions you might have about the cleanup.
