Subway Cave is an increasingly popular destination for hikers seeking a unique viewpoint of the area’s famed red rock landscape. Accessed via a short, unmarked side trail off the Boynton Canyon Trail, the route involves moderate hiking with some rocky, uneven sections. The cave itself is a large, curved alcove in the sandstone, often described as resembling a subway tunnel due to its smooth, rounded walls. Standing inside, visitors are rewarded with a natural frame of the desert scenery outside, making it a favorite spot for photography—especially in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.
Because Subway Cave is not an officially maintained site, there are no signs, facilities, or protective measures in place. Hikers must rely on GPS coordinates, online resources, or local advice to find it, and should practice responsible outdoor ethics by staying on existing paths, packing out their trash, and preserving the fragile environment.
