This week’s – Jesse Kalu.

A Native flute savant, Jesse has lived and ventured in America, traveling through every state since 1976. His move to Sedona in June of 1991 was the start of his musical explorations. By 1993, Jesse began presenting his flute concerts locally in Sedona as well as singing in his native language, Chamorru

In Jan. of 95, he was invited to shareat a Yoga for World Peace Conference in Jerusalem, Israel. In 1996 through 2002, he toured several times in Austria, Germany & Switzerland. He continues to play & create indigenous style flutes, from bamboo growing wild in Sedona.

Jesse has not trained nor understands technical music theory. Each flute of his has a name & song. Emanating through his hand-crafted flutes are the wildlife calls of: doves, quails, loons, hawk, owl, seagulls, dolphins, whales, coyotes, wolf, elk & more.

UPDATED LOCATION!! Due to the overwhelming interest, we're relocating to a larger space for our vigil on Monday, March 4th, where Gathered in This Place and Seattle Pride unite to honor Nex Benedict (Choctaw), a 16-year-old nonbinary teenager from Oklahoma, who tragically lost their life after an assault in a school restroom.

The vigil, welcoming all 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and allies, will now be held at the Intellectual House (4249 Little Canoe Channel NE, Seattle, WA 98105) on University of Washington's Campus.

This space will be led by Indigenous 2SLGBTQIA+ community and elders, organized by Gathered In This Place. Our team is honored to support Gathered In This Place in their mission to “gather, center, and prioritize our Indigenous Two Spirit, q***r and gender diverse relatives in affirming and culturally-rooted spaces to create community, build solidarity, and foster community pride”.

This space is designed to affirm and center the Indigiq***r and Two Spirit community. Non-Indigenous community members and allies are welcome to attend this event. However, they are asked to create space for Indigenous community members to connect and grieve collectively.

Please RSVP to join us in honoring Nex's memory and taking necessary action to support and protect q***r youth.

This week's – Sean Morriseau. Whether it’s writing stories, creating music, public speaking, or making you laugh, Sean is making waves in several different pools.

His spirit name is Tree Standing Alone, his other name is Sean Morriseau, or even Sean Skiez if you listen to his music, but you may know him as Native Pool Boy. Twenty-eight-years-old and living in Thunder Bay, Ontario with his daughter, Sean dedicates every free moment he has to his craft. Even back when he was growing up on the Fort William First Nation Ontario Reserve, he dreamed of a life where everyone knew his name.

“I’ve always had an interest for wanting to be known,” said Sean. “Almost as if I wanted to be famous but that sounds cliché.”

With his elders and knowledge keepers as influences, he set out on a mission to tell his own story and possibly help others in the process of doing so. Creative expression has always been an outlet for Sean but it wasn’t until he started making videos back in 2018 that other people started to notice him.

“I stopped caring about how others saw me and started to love myself,” he said regarding when he started to post videos online. “Overtime Native Pool Boy has become more than just me. It’s everyone that feels they need to have their voice heard.”

Native Pool Boy embodies Sean’s comedic side and the voice he’s most know for. It sprouts from his early days of being a creator under the name Your Mom’s Pool Boy and came into its final stages when Sean realized a lot of his videos covered Indigenous topics. He now stands as an example of breaking cycles, being resilient, and knowing your purpose in life even if others don’t like or respect how you’re doing it.

He’s collaborated with the likes of Lady Tuguy, Joey Styles, Sideneck, and Brett Mooswa but still has hopes of gracing the silver screen for Reservation Dogs, Letterkenny, or Trailer Park Boys. Sean hopes to continue the pace he has going while consistently growing with his peers and always telling his story along the way.

“I just want to be able to give back to the communities and spread positive messages,” Sean summarized.

It’s easy to see that he’s well on his way to accomplishing these goals. His music, stories, and videos carry these messages with grace, structure, and the occasional laughter to wash it all down. I for one cannot wait to see all the great things he has ahead of him.
