For the people who keep claiming “Trump and Republicans are racist,” here’s the part of American history they conveniently leave out.

The president who went after the Ku Klux Klan was a Republican: Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States.

Grant signed the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 and used federal power to enforce it. He sent federal forces into the South, prosecuted Klan members, and worked to protect Black Americans exercising their right to vote during Reconstruction.

The K*K used violence and intimidation to suppress Black voters and Republicans across the South. That is documented American history.

So before repeating the same tired line, remember:

Republicans led the fight to abolish slavery.

Republicans championed the Reconstruction Amendments that abolished slavery, established citizenship and equal protection, and protected voting rights.

And a Republican president used federal power to crush the Klan’s campaign of terror.

If you’re going to talk about racism in American history, at least know the history of who was fighting it.
