Happy Syttende Mai. Today we celebrate Norway’s Constitution Day—a day of joy, freedom, and community.

I remember hearing my family speaking Norwegian as a child. I didn’t understand what they were saying—but I felt the love, the joy, and the strength of generations before me. I’ve been reflecting on how much these moments shaped me—how stories, traditions, and language have become a thread through my life, and now through the books I write and the products I create. 🇳🇴

Syttende Mai isn’t just a celebration of independence… it’s about connection. It’s about passing on stories, songs, and traditions so they live on through us, through our children, and through the generations to come.

Whether you are marching in a parade today, or just enjoying a nice coffee and cardamom roll with your Norwegian flag hanging at home. And, if you're Norwegian, part Norwegian, or simply love the traditions—this day is for you. A reminder that freedom, family, and culture matter. I'm sending you love. 💙

🇳🇴 What is Syttende Mai?

In Norway, May 17th is not a quiet holiday. It’s full of life—flags waving, children marching, music playing, and a deep sense of pride in Norway’s freedom and identity. It’s the kind of celebration that fills the streets and your heart.

But, It’s more than just Norway’s Constitution Day—it’s a celebration of freedom, resilience, and hope.

At my recent Daughters of Norway meeting, a friend shared an impactful story about Syttende Mai and what it meant for her. She was a young child in Norway in the 1940’s when Norway was occupied, and for years there were no flags flying. When the war ended on May 8th, 1945, just days before Syttende Mai, the sight of flags waving again was unforgettable. “It was freedom, When I see the Norwegian flag waving, it brings tears to my eyes. Because it’s not just a flag—it’s freedom.” she said.

That story moved me deeply. These traditions, these symbols, matter. They remind us where we’ve come from—and what it means to carry that legacy forward. ❤️💙

I always look forward to Syttende Mai and celebrating in our local Ballard parade. This year I will be at my daughter’s dance recital instead, but I will be wearing my Norwegian sweater with pride.
