As their secret spirals out of control, it leads to catastrophic consequences that shatter Stephen's family, career, and sense of self. The "damage" of the title refers not just to the hurt caused to others, but also the deep internal collapse Stephen suffers — a man who trades everything for a fleeting, doomed passion.
Louis Malle directs the film with a kind of chilly precision, letting the actors' silences, glances, and body language speak as loudly as their words. The s*x scenes are explicit but not gratuitous — they are raw, almost clinical depictions of obsession rather than expressions of love.
The performances are outstanding:
Jeremy Irons is heartbreaking as Stephen, capturing a man who seems to watch himself make fatal decisions and is powerless to stop.
Juliette Binoche brings mystery and sadness to Anna, making her both vulnerable and dangerously detached.
Miranda Richardson, as Stephen’s wife Ingrid, delivers a devastating performance — especially in a pivotal confrontation scene that earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
