Matt Sweeting moved to Gainesville in the early 90s and has been a solid contributor to the music scene since that time. He hosted shows at UTILITY HOUSE prior to taking over the HARDBACK CAFE (with Drew) from Alan Bushnell. He co-founded WAYWARD COUNCIL (with me, Laura and Don). He was a long-time employee of NO IDEA and their mail order empire.

The Story of Jud Jud, the World’s Only A Capella, Straight-Edge Hardcore Band

A good write-up - nice piece of journalism - except for the dramatized mystery part. B isn’t really that hard to find, since he’s been active in the Oakland scene with No Statik and other bands for quite some time.

The search for the mythologized duo that lampooned the hardcore scene and went undocumented, until now.

Just finished "The First Rule of Punk" by Celia C. Pérez and it was totally AWESOME!!! You should go get a copy for the young punk in your life. My son is on chapter 19, but already said it is great, too.

Uncle Tupelo - We've Been Had

Uncle Tupelo tunes for Sunday to welcome the first Fall weather in the PNW... but here's one of the jammers about the bu****it of the music industry, which was true in the 90s and probably just as true today.

The Clash - Know Your Rights

This is a public service announcement
With guitar

Know your rights
All three of them

Number one
You have the right not to be killed
Murder is a crime
Unless it was done
By a policeman
Or an aristocrat

Oh, know your rights

And number two
You have the right to food money
Providing of course
You don't mind a little
Investigation, humiliation
And if you cross your fingers
Rehabilitation

Know your rights
These are your rights

Oh, know these rights

Number three
You have the right to free speech
As long as
You're not dumb enough to actually try it
Know your rights
These are your rights

Oh, know your rights
These are your rights

All three of 'em
Ha!

It has been suggested in some quarters
That this is not enough
Well
Get off the streets
Run
Get off the streets

Dean’s Room, by Allison Crutchfield

Our "band" of the day is the delightfully prolific and influential songwriter Allison Crutchfield ( ex Swearin' , P.S. Eliot , Bad Banana ) and her song "Dean's Room" off of her latest record, "Tourist In This Town" on Merge Records . Try not to get this hook stuck in your head all day, I dare ya!

Refusal, by Strike Anywhere

Our band of the day is Richmond, VA's Strike Anywhere - Official ! with their song "Refusal" from their 2001 debut LP on Jade Tree Records. If you don't own a copy of "Change Is A Sound", today would be a perfect day to download from Bandcamp as they are donating all proceeds to the ACLU Nationwide . You can also send as a gift to someone special in your life.

"Refusal"

Sister
I won't let you go
I won't let them take you
into the silence of a past divided
Brother
keep teaching the power
we only move together
away from the past that made us fall apart

I refuse to run and I will die
before I kneel in this life

systems
of profits we punish
with love as our weapon
and unity
unity rebirth in fire

I refuse to run and I will die
before I kneel in this life

are we crucified
we defend our birthright
equality betrayed
and every hour a voice is lost
but every rage defies the cost
embrace the whole world as your kin
truth to truth and skin to skin
begin

searching for an end to the bu****it reactions
another way to separate us
and end to the bu****it of separation
another way to keep us from truth

action patrol - p.c.a.

Once upon a time, ACTION PATROL was a band from Richmond, VA. Their discography, On Patrol 1993-1996, was released by Whirled Records in 1997. I suspect this song might have been on some 7" prior to that, but I wasn't able to find any proof. I was fortunate enough to catch them in Gainesville at least once. Maybe twice? I have polaroids of the show, which was totally impractical. It's the first show I ever brought a camera to... starting a 20+ year tradition of blurry evidence and missed opportunities. : )

Bad Religion - No Control - 03 - No Control

Listen up! Our 30th consecutive band of the day is Bad Religion! "No Control" is the eponymous song from their 1989 album released on Epitaph Records. There are a bunch of other great songs on this album, so go find more of it to listen to. Start a circle pit in the living room! Hell yeah! Man, the 80's would have been a total waste without punk and new wave.

The 3rd track from the 1989 album by Bad Religion. The physical form of this album can be purchased here: http://www.amazon.com/No-Control-Bad-Religion/dp/B0...
