Hope you were able to catch the 55th episode of Dress Rehearsal, on 107.3 KBFG Seattle, that welcomed Italian pianists Federica Righini - Riccardo Zadra, who are partners in music as well as in life! Riccardo and Federica, for over twenty-five years, have shared an intense activity as concert performers and teachers with a constant exploration of the numerous disciplines and paths of personal growth. These experiences have opened up new horizons in the way of dealing with musical interpretation, performance and music teaching. Their book titled “Maestro di Te Stesso” which can be translated as “Master of yourself” applies "NLP" (Neuro Linguistic Programming) to music and performance. Their activity developed through the creation of a piano duet (and during the hour we will have a chance to listen to several recordings of them performing duet music) and through the organization of courses and seminars of piano interpretation, until the foundation of the International Piano Academy in Padova, Italy from 1998 to 2013, in which they have trained many young pianists from all over Italy and abroad. Riccardo and Federica today offer individual coaching for professional musicians who are interested in studying these techniques and broadening their visions. During the hour we will have the opportunity to chat with Riccardo and Federica about their life and their pedagogical development program as well as listen to some recordings of them playing in piano duet formation. In case you missed the live broadcast you can listen to it at the link below!

Do you think life is complex? And what about music, is it complex? If you do think it is complex, join me tomorrow Friday May 6th at 8am PST (and Sunday May 8th at 5pm PST), on 107.3FM KBFG Seattle, my radio show "Dress Rehearsal" will give you a taste of a musical movement called "New Complexity", which is characterized by the use of techniques which require complex musical notation. This includes unstable textures, microtonality, highly disjunct melodic contour, complex layered rhythms and abrupt changes in texture. The origin of the name New Complexity is uncertain but one of its founders is British composer Michael Finnissy and during the hour we will listen to his work titled English Country-Tunes. As Arnold Whittall reviewed the recording of the works Gramophone Magazine) he wrote "Anyone anticipating Graingerish essays in flamboyant folkishness will soon realize that they have been led up the garden path but, with luck, they won't mind too much. The tunes identified by Finnissy's titles—''Green meadows'', ''The seeds of love'', and so on—might ultimately be revealed if every one of the layers of transformation were stripped away. But there remains a certain Satie-esque spirit in the association of such evocative labels with such uncompromising music. Beneath its modernist surface Finnissy's piano writing has a Lisztian range, alternating bell-like meditations with virtuosic outbursts: as it happens, he studied with, among others, the Liszt expert Humphrey Searle". Don't miss it!

A native of Palermo in Sicily, the young Sciarrino was attracted to the visual arts, but began experimenting with music when he was twelve. Though he had some lessons in composition he is primarily self-taught as a composer. Sciarrino has composer for the major theaters around the world, including Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Biennale di Venezia, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and London Symphony Orchestra, to name a few. Sciarrino’s discography is extensive, having recorded over 70 CDs, many of which have won awards. Apart from being author of most of the librettos of his operas, Sciarrino has also written many articles, essays and texts. His book about musical form: "Le figure della musica da Beethoven a oggi" published by Ricordi 1998 is particularly important. During the hour will go through some significant works by Sciarrino that fully depict his musical aesthetics and the range of his work, which also draws inspirations from past composers such as Domenico Scarlatti, Gesualdo da Venosa, Maurice Ravel and....a surprise encore.
