Months ago, my daughter Claire had a baby—my first grandchild. I offered to help: stay, cook, clean, and rock the baby so she could rest. She hesitated, then called one night, her voice cold and rehearsed. Claire said, “It’s better if you don’t visit. My husband says it’s unhealthy for the baby. He doesn’t want him to think being a single mom is normal.” I was speechless. I raised Claire alone from age three, without her father’s support. I worked two jobs, skipped meals, sewed her prom dress, and signed every Father’s Day card. Now, all of that was a warning sign. It crushed me. Claire needed to stop that. I replied, “Understood.” I hung up, wiped my tears, went to the nursery, and packed up the gifts I’d been keeping. The next day, I took everything away—not to her house, but somewhere else entirely.
