THINK ABOUT IT! What could we do differently to inspire more?

“A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” Salvador D.

The idea that an artist’s highest purpose is to inspire aligns with a widely held understanding of art’s role in society—one that extends far beyond personal expression. Artists possess a unique capacity to connect people, influence cultural discourse, and enrich human life by awakening emotion, reflection, and action in others.

Ways Artists Inspire Others

Evoke Emotion and Empathy
Artists have the ability to elicit powerful emotional responses, enabling audiences to connect with lived experiences beyond their own. Through this exchange, art fosters empathy and a shared sense of humanity.

Challenge Perspectives
By questioning conventions and pushing boundaries, artists invite viewers to reconsider assumptions, engage critically with the world, and see familiar realities from new vantage points.

Prompt Action and Social Change
Throughout history, art has served as a catalyst for civic engagement and social transformation—raising awareness around issues such as apartheid, the AIDS epidemic, and civil rights, and motivating collective action.

Provide Escape and Renewal
Art offers moments of wonder and reflection, allowing people to step outside the pressures of daily life and reconnect with deeper truths, imagination, and possibility.

Spark Creativity in Others
Encountering a compelling work of art often ignites creative potential in others, encouraging them to explore their own voices and produce meaningful expressions of their experiences.

Offer Joy and Hope
By introducing beauty, optimism, and resonance into the world, art sustains emotional well-being and affirms life’s value, even in difficult times.

Ultimately, artists serve as vital communicators—bridging cultures, generations, and individuals. Their work leaves a lasting imprint, capable of transforming personal perspectives and shaping society itself.

YOU LEARN SOMETHING EVERY DAY!
The dots used in pop art are called Ben-Day dots:
Origin Benjamin Henry Day Jr., an American illustrator and printer, invented Ben-Day dots in 1879. They were originally used in commercial printing to create shades and colors by overlaying small, evenly-spaced dots.

Pop art American artist Roy Lichtenstein was a hallmark user of Ben-Day dots, often enlarging and exaggerating them in his paintings and sculptures. Lichtenstein's use of Ben-Day dots transformed mass-produced imagery into high art and influenced many artists, illustrators, and graphic designers. Some of his most famous works that feature Ben-Day dots include Whaam! (1963), Drowning Girl (1963), Ohhh...Alright... (1964), Hopeless (1963), and Girl with Ball (1961).

How to create Ben-Day dots You can create Ben-Day dots using crayons, markers, bubble wrap, and liquid tempera paint.
